Step-by-Step

Get Elements Plus at elementsplus.net
Download the correct version for your version of Photoshop Elements.

Open your image.

Click the Effects button at the bottom of the screen
Go into the Classic section and click in to Elements+.

Choose the 2nd option, Selections.

Double click Select Color Range.

Use the eyedropper tool to choose a color to select from your image.

Adjust the Fuzziness to get the best mask, you want the mask to be mostly white.

Click the Invert check box and hit the OK button.

In the Layers panel click the Layer Mask button to convert the selection into a layer mask.

Clean up the layer mask with a black brush on the layer mask side of the layer.

Remove any color fringing by using the Sponge tool to Desaturation the color from the image side of the layer.

Use small soft edge brush to paint black on the layer mask to hide any stray hairs that don't look good.

Drag and drop a new background from the Photo Bin, or use any other method you prefer to bring in a new background.

Add a Levels Adjustment Layer to the background layer to match the values of the subject layer.
