How to Use Elements+ Selections – Quick Mask Mode

Ready to master some precision editing with Quick Mask Mode in Elements+? Quick Mask is a powerful way to create or refine complex selections by painting directly on your image.

Since Photoshop Elements doesn’t have Quick Mask Mode natively, Elements+ adds this handy feature for you!

What is Quick Mask Mode?

Quick Mask Mode lets you paint areas on your image to create or refine a selection. When you enter Quick Mask Mode, everything outside your selection is temporarily masked (covered), so you can precisely define what you want to select by painting with a brush.

How to Use Quick Mask Mode in Elements+:

  1. Open Your Image
Load the image you want to edit in Photoshop Elements.

  2. Launch Elements+

    • Go to the Effects panel.
    • Scroll to the Elements+ section and click it.
    • Select Selections, then choose Quick Mask.
  3. Enter Quick Mask Mode

    • Once activated, your image will enter Quick Mask Mode.
    • The masked areas (unselected) will appear as a red overlay, while the unmasked areas represent your current selection.
  4. Paint Your Mask

    • Use the Brush Tool to paint directly on your image:
      • Black adds to the mask (hides areas).
      • White removes from the mask (reveals areas).
      • Adjust the Brush size and Hardness for more control over fine details.
  5. Exit Quick Mask Mode

    • When you’re done refining your mask, click Exit Quick Mask Mode in Elements+.
    • Your painted mask will now be converted into a selection.
  6. Apply Your Edits

    • With your selection active, you can apply adjustments, filters, or even create a mask for non-destructive editing.

Pro Tips for Quick Mask Mode

  • Feathering the Selection: If you want softer edges, go to Select > Feather before applying your edits.
  • Switching Brush Colors: Use the X key to quickly toggle between black and white when painting your mask—it’s a real time-saver!
  • Zoom In for Details: Don’t forget to zoom in when working on intricate areas to get precise control.

Quick Mask Mode is perfect for tricky selections, like isolating hair, fur, or semi-transparent objects.
