Duplicate the background layer and hide original
Method 1. Crop the Photo
Use the Crop Tool to crop into the image to remove the unwanted equipment.
Choose your crop ratio from the drop down list then drag a rectangle on your image to select the crop to area.
The main problem with this technique is that the image is now smaller, so if you want more available room in the background you will need a different technique.
Method 2. Stretch the background
Using the rectangular marquee tool draw a marquee around the right side going in to the backdrop.
Use the ctrl+t keyboard shortcut to bring up the control handles and pull the right middle handle to the right to stretch the background out until the backdrop is at the edge of the photo.
Repeat for the left and top sides.
The problem with this trick is that it can make for an uneven background.
Method 3. New gradient layer
Select the subject using ether Subject Select or a selection tool, use Refine Edge to clean up the selection, then output to a new layer with layer mask.
Make a new layer above the background copy layer.
Select the Eyedropper Tool and in the Tool Options set it for a 5x5 selection and All Layers.
Select the Gradient Tool, click on the right side color stop then click the color swatch. Using the Eyedropper tool from the Color Selector choose a light color from the background.
Repeat for the left side color stop and choose a dark color.
Set the Gradient to a Radial Gradient.
Check the Reverse option, then pull from the center out to a corner to create the gradient.
If you want you can add text behind your subject. Simply click anywhere on the new background with the text tool and type in your new text. Set the size and color and position the text as desired. Slightly behind the subject is a nice look
