Change Color 2024

Change Color 2024

Here is a simple way to change the color of an object using Photoshop Elements.

1. Open your image and duplicate the background. Hide the background layer, this is just a safety in case we need to get back to the original for any reason.

2. Select the new layer and using your choice of selection tools make a careful selection around the area that you want to recolor. The selection tools you decide to use depend on the particular object in the photo.

3. Do any clean up that is needed on the selection. If you end with the Refined Edge tool then output to a new layer with layer mask. If you end with just a nice clean selection then duplicate the layer again and hit the layer mask button at the top of the layer panel.

4. Go to the Layers menu, choose New Adjustment Layer and Hue/Saturation. Check the checkbox for creating a clipping mask, this will limit the color change to just the object layer.

5. In Hue/Saturation you can choose to Colorize or not, again depends on the image so give both a try.

6. Slide the Hue slider left or right to change the color. Use the Saturation slider to add more or less color, and use the Lightness slider to lighten or darken the color.

7. If you want to try a few different colors make sure that the top visible layer is selected then use the ctrl+shift+alt+e keyboard shortcut to merge all visible layers into a new layer. Now hide this layer. You can now do more experimentation, to make another copy just repeat the steps.

8. For Black move the Saturation slider clear to the left to remove all color then move the Lightness slider towards the left, but not all the way, to get a nice black look. You may want to add a Levels Adjustment Layer to boost the contrast.

9. For White move the Lightness slider towards the right.

That's It!
